Eligibility Details for Countrywide Loan Modification Settlement Emerge
March 26, 2010 - Boston - The Massachusetts Attorney General announced yesterday a settlement with Countrywide Financial that may benefit homeowners in Massachusetts. Countywide Financial, which is owned by Bank of America, agreed to provide $18 million in loan modification for those with "underwater mortgages" in Massachusetts.
Now more details are emerging about who will be eligible to receive loan modifications under the terms of this settlement. According to reports in American Banker, Bank of America will forgive up to 30% of the principal for homeowners who received adjustable-rate or hybrid-adjustable-rate mortgages from Countrywide Financial. To qualify, homeowners must be severely underwater on their mortgage, meaning that their loan is 120% or more of their home's value.
However, there is a catch -- in order to take advantage of the principal forgiveness, homeowners must pay their mortgage on time for at least 5 years. There's no word on when these loan modifications will begin in Massachusetts, but hopefully this is a welcome sign for homeowners who are facing foreclosure.
