Freetown Receives Grant for New Jaws of Life Tools

February 5, 2010 - Freetown - Due to a $35,150 grant from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, Freetown has received the funds necessary to purchase two new Jaws of Life tools without affecting the town's budget.

According to reportsd in South Coast Today, the grant will be used to replace two current Jaws of Life units that are 30-years-old. Rep. Barney Frank told reporters that he is glad to see Freetown receive this grant as smaller communities tend to get overlooked when it comes to large grant programs.

The new Jaws of Life tools will help local firefighters free victims of car and motor vehicle accidents who are trapped in their vehicles and in need of emergency medical attention. In return for receiving the grant, Freetown will only need to contribute about $2,000 towards the Jaws of Life purchase. The Freetown fire department has also received AFG funds in the past which were used to purchase self-contained breathing apparatus and air packs.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has provided over $3.5 billion since 2001 to fire departments and emergency management groups across the country to aid in the purchase of equipment, vehicles, gear, and fire prevention activities.
