March 15, 2010 - Westfield - An 18-year-old teenager will serve time in jail for his role in a 2008 car crash that killed 16-year-old Carlos Montes de Oca. According to reports at MassLive.com, 18-year-old Alexander Merkulov was sentenced to 60 days in jail on Thursday. Even though his jail sentence totals 2.5 years, Merkulov will only serve the 60 days because of an agreement with prosecutors.
Merkulov was behind the wheel of a car on the night of November 23, 2008 when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The car accident occurred on Shaker Road in Westfield. Carlos Montes de Oca was killed and 3 other people were injured. Alexander Merkulov and Montes de Oca were students together at Westfield High School.
Merkulov was originally charged with vehicular homicide and drunk driving, but he was only prosecuted on a lower misdemeanor charge. He will begin his jail sentence on May 24, 2010. Judge Philip Contant of Westfield District Court presided over the sentencing.
