April 9, 2010 - What is HAFA? The Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives (HAFA) program is designed to help prevent foreclosures by offering incentives to lending institutions that process short sales or a deed-in-lieu of foreclosure. A short sale occurs when a homeowner sells their home for less than what they owe on their mortgage (which must be approved by the lender). In a deed-in-lieu of foreclosure, homeowners transfer the deed on their house to the lending institution.
Who is eligible for HAFA? Distressed homeowners at risk of losing their home in a foreclosure may be eligible for HAFA if they meet several criteria, according to MakingHomeAffordable.gov. The program is designed for those who are not eligible for the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), which focuses on loan modifications, or those who failed to complete the mandatory three-month trial period for that program. Homeowners who miss at least two mortgage payments after receiving a loan modification may also be eligible. You can also participate in the HAFA program by requesting it from your lender.
What are the benefits of HAFA? If you elect to participate in the HAFA program, you can receive $3,000 to assist with relocation to different residence.
