When choosing a credit card it is important to know the terms and conditions that you'll be agreeing to. Always pay close attention to your credit card disclosures, particularly the fees, charges, benefits, and the interest rates that will have an impact on your available credit.
Reading the fine print on your credit card disclosure
The most important details of your credit card disclosures are often the hardest to read. The fine print can be confusing, or even misleading. Be sure to locate and understand the annual percentage rate, monthly maintenance charges, grace periods, and the balance transfer offers listed in the agreement. It is always good to speak with a company representative before accepting any terms.
How do I determine which is the best credit card for me?
There is no specific formula as to which credit card is the best. The advantages depend on the individual. If you will use your card often, you may want to consider a card that offers you point incentives with every purchase. These incentives allow you to buy products and services once you have accumulated a certain number of points.
If you plan to pay off your balance each month, you'll want a card that offers you a grace period.
What is a grace period?
A grace period allows you to avoid finance charges if you pay your full balance before it's due. Some cards will offer this and some will not. Without a grace period, a credit card company will impose finance charges every time you use your card. Always carefully read your credit card statement to ensure your credit card company is honoring any grace periods that were agreed upon when you signed up for your credit card.
