The current U.S. economic decline has had a number of terrible societal effects that range beyond the stock market and mortgage crisis. Ever since the country entered into recession, child abuse has been on the rise. In fact, Reuters reports that in 2009, Massachusetts child abuse cases reached a 5-year-high. Some child abuse experts blame the increase on the difficult economic situation.
What Constitutes Child Abuse?
Child abuse is the physical, psychological, or emotional mistreatment of a child. This can include child neglect as well as sexual abuse. The most common forms of child abuse are categorized by 4 main groups.
Physical Abuse
Physical abuse is physical harm that is caused to a child by an adult. This can include striking, choking, or even the shaking of a child. In Massachusetts and the entirety of the United States, any aggression that inflicts physical injuries or death upon a child is considered illegal and punishable by law.
Child Neglect
Child neglect occurs when an adult who is responsible for a child fails to provide basic needs, such as food, clothing, or hygiene. These needs can also include emotional support, a proper education (failing to send a child to school), and necessary medical care.
Sexual Abuse
Child sexual abuse (CSA) occurs when an adult or adolescent engages in sexual activity with a child, oftentimes for the purpose of sexual stimulation. Some forms of CSA include the indecent exposure of genitals to a child, actual physical sexual contact, and the use of a child in child pornography.
Emotional and Psychological Abuse
Emotional child abuse can include ridicule, degradation, excessive criticism, humiliation, or even name-calling. Victims of emotional child abuse will usually suffer from some kind of behavioral abnormalities that may continue into adulthood.
