Massachusetts Bicycle Laws and Lawsuits (Part A)

It's easy to forget your cares when you're riding your bike, coasting downhill on a warm, sunny day. However, Massachusetts bicycle laws still apply to you, as do the rules of the road. It's important to keep this in mind to avoid a potentially serious bicycle accident.

Massachusetts Bicycle Laws

As a bicyclist, you have the same rights to the road as the driver of a car. The only exception to this is when it comes to highways and other areas where bicycles are specifically prohibited. These rules are in place to prevent bicycle accidents in Massachusetts.

Likewise, you also have responsibilities when it comes to riding your bicycle. For instance, when riding on a road, you are required to signal your turns. Signaling with your hand is considered sufficient for Massachusetts bicycle laws.

You also have the option of riding on the sidewalk. The only exception to this is in the sidewalks of business districts, which are restricted to pedestrians. Speaking of pedestrians, you are always required to give them the right-of-way.

Massachusetts bicycle laws also cover rules for passengers. These are as follows:

• Passengers can only ride on a seat permanently attached to the bicycle
• Baby seats are needed for passengers younger than 4 years of age, or below 40 pounds in weight
• Seats for young children must have harnesses
• Passengers under 1 year of age are prohibited under all circumstances

There are also safety rules that apply if you're a bicyclist under the age of 16. These younger riders are required to wear a bicycle helmet at all times.

On the whole, these rules are fairly simple to follow and are designed both for your safety, and for the safety of others on the road. However, accidents can happen, which is why it is helpful to learn more about car driver liability when it comes to Massachusetts bicycle accidents.
