Opting Out for Your Privacy Protection
Just because you can't completely stop a credit card company from sharing your personal financial information may not mean that you don't have any options. When you receive privacy notices, read them over to see whether you have the choice to opt out, or restrict the company from sharing your personal information. While you may or may not have options, you won't know unless you read the privacy notices of all of your cards.
If, after reading your privacy notices, you find that you can opt out, follow the instructions exactly as provided by the credit card company. If you receive privacy notices when you sign on with a new credit card company and can opt out, you must do so during a "reasonable" time period - usually within about 30 days. If you don't opt out the first time, you can always opt out later. However, opting out isn't retroactive. You won't be able to do anything about any of your personal financial information that has already been shared.
If you are truly concerned about privacy protection, use a credit card company's privacy practices as part of your decision-making process when choosing a credit card.
