3 Massachusetts Residents Involved in Fatal Florida Bus Crash

February 23, 2010 - Boston, Mass. - Three Massachusetts residents were involved in a fatal charter bus crash that occurred at about 2:15 p.m. Monday in Florida.

The Boston Herald reports that there were 32 people onboard the charter bus at the time of the crash. All of the passengers were senior citizens, ranging in age from 66 to 87 years old.

Two passengers died at the scene of the bus rollover accident, while 3 suffered critical personal injuries. Other passengers sustained minor or serious injuries.

The charter bus accident was set into motion when a Mercury Marquis did not yield to the bus as it merged onto Route 27. The car struck the bus, which rolled over off of the highway.

Some passengers were ejected from the bus during the rollover accident, and the majority of the senior citizens had to be transported to the hospital. Eleven crash victims were taken to Lake Placid hospital, while 12 were taken to a hospital in Sebring. It is still unclear about the medical condition of the Massachusetts passengers.

The senior citizens were on an educational tour in Florida, called Discover Old Florida. The tour is connected with South Florida Community College. Authorities continue to investigate the accident, and have not yet released the names of the victims.
