February 15, 2010 - North Attleboro, Mass. - Five fans of Disney teen star Selena Gomez were injured at Emerald Square Mall when an escalator malfunctioned during the star's Saturday visit to the North Attleboro mall.
According to myFox Boston, a crowd gathered in anticipation of an appearance by Gomez, who is the star of Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place. The young star was scheduled to participate in a question-and-answer session with fans.
When Gomez appeared, fans trying to get a glimpse of her by standing on the mall's escalator were surprised when the escalator suddenly began moving backwards. The sudden change in direction sent some victims flying, resulting in personal injuries to 5 fans.
Workers repairing the escalator mentioned that the malfunction can occur when the device becomes too crowded with people, which calls into question whether sufficient crowd-control measures had been put into place in anticipation of the event.
The escalator, which is located near Sears, was shut down after the incident for repairs, and the 5 injured fans were sent to the hospital for the treatment of accident injuries.
Firefighters were on the scene shortly after the incident, which occurred at about 4 p.m. A more thorough investigation of the accident is expected to be conducted on Tuesday, according to officials.
We are thankful that such a frightening accident did not result in any severe injuries or fatalities. Our firm joins the families and friends of those involved in praying that their loved ones recover soon.
We understand that North Attleboro safety officials are looking into the mall escalator accident. However, even while the police are investigating Saturday's accident, we suggest that those injured consider consulting a SouthCoast, Massachusetts personal injury lawyer.
