Bill Proposes Driving Tests for Elderly Drivers in Massachusetts

Posted on Feb 11, 2010

February 11, 2010 - Boston, Mass. - Cell phone restrictions are not the only proposed change for Massachusetts drivers. Part of the bill that bans texting while driving would also add new restrictions for elderly drivers in Massachusetts.

According to The Boston Globe, the new bill would force Massachusetts drivers who are 75 years old and over to take a vision test before renewing their license. The current law demands that all Massachusetts drivers renew their license every 5 years, but they only have to renew it in person every 10 years.

The new driver restrictions would require that seniors take both a vision test and a road test every 5 years. Additionally, the doctor of a senior driver could recommend to the Registry of Motor Vehicles that they not have their license renewed if there is reason to believe that they cannot safely operate a vehicle.

Issues of senior driver safety and accident rates have been a topic of concern in recent years. According to the American Automobile Association, about 1 in 5 Americans will be aged 65 by the year 2030.

New Hampshire implemented a similar senior driver law in the 1960s without incident and Massachusetts residents and legislators who support the bill are hopeful that it will be as easily accepted as it was in its neighboring state.
