No Criminal Charges in Case of Elderly Woman Killed by Fire Hose

Posted on Feb 11, 2010

February 11, 2010 - Cambridge, Mass. - The investigation continues in the case of an elderly Massachusetts woman who died after being struck by an unsecured fire hose in an accident involving a Cambridge fire truck. It has been determined that no criminal charges will be filed in the woman's death.

According to The Boston Herald, the relatives of Gertrude "Trudy" King were notified of the decision to not press charges on Monday. The grieving family of the accident victim are still seeking answers in this tragic case.

King, who is originally from Somerville, had just completed her errands on January 26 when she was struck by the loose fire hose attached to a Cambridge fire engine responding to a call on Pleasant Street.

Authorities said that King was standing on a median as the fire truck passed her. King, who weighed less than 100 pounds, was struck by the truck's nearly 200-foot hose, which has been improperly stored. The elderly woman passed away two days after the accident at Massachusetts General Hospital.

King's funeral was on February 1 and it is reported that two firefighters attended. The victim's family continues to seek answers in the wake of this tragic accident, and hope to meet with local prosecutors to learn what led to these fatal events. Though there have been no criminal charges filed, the family may be eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit, as wrongful death is a civil case and subject to a different criteria.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Gertrude King for their terrible and heartbreaking loss. Our heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved King.
