Two Children Injured, One Critically, in Swansea Accident

Posted on Feb 18, 2010

Two young children were hospitalized, one critically, following a car accident with a Swansea police car outside of the Early Minds Day-Care center on Route 6 in Swansea Wednesday afternoon.

Information reported in the Providence Journal indicates that at about 2 pm Swansea Police Officer Alan LaChance was attempting to stop a vehicle for a suspended registration when the car carrying the children pulled out of the day care center heading into the opposite lane of travel. LaChance's cruiser then collided with the driver's side of the car carrying the children sending both vehicles off the road. According to the Swansea Police, LaChance wasn't in pursuit of the vehicle.

The two year old and the one year old children, who were sitting in the back seat of the car, were taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital. The two year old was listed in critical condition on Wednesday night according to the Swansea Police.

The driver of the car, Jared Sheldon, and his passenger, Shelbi Provencher, were also injured and treated at Rhode Island Hospital.  Officer LaChance was reportedly treated for minor injuries at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River.

As parents of young children ourselves, our thoughts go out to the families of the children and we hope that they make a full and complete recovery from their serious injuries. We also hope that all of the adults hurt in the accident, including Officer LaChance, make a quick recovery. It would be in the best interests of the parents of the injured children to contact an experienced Southcoast Massachusetts personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
